Having been a clinical therapist for 35 years, I've never seen a psychiatric hospital turn down the admission of a female patient on the recommendation of her husband.
It can be a dilemma in the psychiatry of a patient to get enough information from silent or withdraw persons the information needed to make an accurate diagnosis.
In one third of cases, husbands themselves are traumatized by psychiatric events of their wives: depression, mania, suicide, agoraphobia and more. These men are very humble about the situation, and self checking of their attitudes and motives.
But, the situation also draws the attention of the male Gaslighter: hey, this is pretty easy: if I tell them she's crazy, they'll lock here up!
I've seen some horrible abuses from this. But, there's also been wives who have been Gaslighted for years, and have been so convinced they're crazy, they they fully accept that they're serious psychiatric patient. In one case, the wife willing went into long term care at State Mental Hospital South. Over the two years, the husband continued his plans of an affair with his mistress and the draining of the wife's inheritance.
Unfortunately, psychiatrists and hospitals have not been as self checking as many husbands: I would estimate that the real motive for psychiatrist and hospitals in admitting patients was only for ego and money. And, I've some horror stories about all that:
the husband Gaslighter uses "you're crazy" very well, and the mental health structure of psychiatrists and hospitals go along, as co-criminals.
My opinion: more people these days actually need good quality care inpatient: but let's take out those who've been gaslighted with crazy making abuse of years, and use those beds for those seriously and dangerously mentally ill.
